UCLA and Tumblr are joining forces to live stream a new music series from the school’s Westwood campus. Called Office Hours, the six-episode run begins Jan. 19 with electronic music star Kaskade. The second session, on February 7, will feature Machine Gun Kelly with additional acts to be announced. Longtime music journalist and Billboard contributor Steve Baltin hosts the series.
Said Kaskade of the Office Hours concept: “I’m excited to talk shop with the students at UCLA who are looking to get into the music industry. It’s inspiring to see the faces and hear the voices of the people who are next, and I’m always up for sharing my experiences, both good and bad.”
Each of the interviews will be live-streamed on werd.tumblr.com.
Speaking of the genesis of the idea, Baltin credited an introduction to two students, David Brik and Allan Brik. “They had set up a Music Industry Committee and were looking for help to start a speaker series,” he said, “I was very impressed with their ambition and how much they were focused on music education. I jumped on board.”
As for the artists, Baltin added, “This is an opportunity to share their stories and give back to students eager to learn about the business. The response has been fantastic and I can’t wait to unveil the other four guests in the coming months.”
Tatiana Oliveira Simonian, Head of Partnerships, Tumblr, noted: “The in-person and digital seminar gives UCLA students and music fans everywhere unprecedented access to engage with their favorite artists through the important lens of education.”
